THE STORAGE SHED was a nightmare. It wasn’t that the shed’s contents weren’t useful, it was that A.J. hadn’t organized them well enough to find anything. As such, Jaime found herself waist-high among unopened boxes of medical supplies, cases of bottled water, a few ancient computer monitors, scuba gear, life-saving buoys, and rigid rescue stretchers. She managed to find a shovel and handed it to A.J. over the top of an opened box containing bright-yellow and fluorescent-green canvas tote bags. Jaime pulled one out.

“What are these?”

“Oh, they’re membership totes with MMRU logoed on both sides.”

“Membership totes?” Jaime asked.

“You know, whenever someone donates to the center, or signs up to be a member, I make up a goodie bag with a bunch of brochures and either put a mug or pad of paper and pen in the bag as a thank you. If the donation’s significant, I throw in an embroidered MMRU T-shirt.”

Jaime grinned from ear to ear. “This is exactly what we need!”

“Goodie bags? We need goodie bags to fight Freda?”

“We’re going to use the bags for sand. Fill them up, knot them, and place them along the center’s base. How many have you got?”

“A hundred? Maybe two? I can’t remember how many I gave out at the last fundraiser.”

“It’ll have to be enough. How about another shovel?”

“There’s one leaning against the outdoor shower.”

Jaime rubbed her hands together with obvious delight. “It looks like we’re in business, A.J. Norris. Let’s get started.”
